“Sedekah Laut” Traditional Ritual



A ritual held by fishermen as grateful expression to God Almighty,and the spirit who rules the ocean, for fishing product. One of attraction in this sedekah laut ritual is “melarung” (to float) ritual offering in the form of everyday necessities such as snacks, side dishes, complete “tumpeng” ( ceremonial dish of yellow rice served in a cone shape) that is put onto “jolen” (sedan chair) and addressed to some ocean spirits. The aim of this ritual is entirely to ask respectfully for safety in order that the fishermen can go fishing safely and obtain adequate yield. This ritual is carried uot once a year on selasa kliwon or jumat kliwon ( 5th day on java week ) of sura month which is considered sacred and magical.
